Kosi Bay Hiking Trail Info

Kosi Slackpacking Information

History

SIYAZENZELA HIKING started the Kosi slackpacking trail in 2007/8 after the old Kosi trail and camps deteriorated beyond repair.

The hiking trail is along various routes around the lakes, beaches, through forests and savannah.

The trail is a slackpacking trail which means we cater for you and we cart your luggage from place to place. You stay in Lodges, community camps, bush huts and various accommodation. Each establishment will host you in their particular style. Hikers only hike in the morning with optional afternoon activities (snorkel, canoe, boat tour on lakes) provided by establishments to highlight the best Kosi has to offer.

Trail Route

We use a variety of camps, lodges or guest houses and the accommodation might change but the hike distances remains the same. In slackpacking terms the hikes are long (up to 15km on a day, sometimes on loose sand). Hikes now start at Utshwayelo Camp because this camp can be reached with a normal vehicle. Vehicles will be stored there. Guests will be brought back to there vehicles on last day. Routes are sometimes done in reverse.

Trail Dates

Their is no standard route and there are no fixed dates for starting.

Group Size

Groups of 8 is perfect but we will do a lesser hike with 2 guests in off-season. Not all the camps can accommodate 12 guests in accommodation commensurate with the expected standard. When the group is bigger than 8 we will correspond and quote you accordingly.

When to come?

The winter months are cooler and whales are seen from July to November. The turtle season starts in November too. The trail is closed in December and January because of heat and it is difficult to find accommodation in some comes already overbooked. February it is very hot but the last turtles come to lay eggs and the first turtle hatchlings appear.
